Building an Open-Source Community for Developer-First Security Ecosystem

Client Overview

BoxyHQ is an open-source SaaS platform that simplifies implementing essential security measures for modern applications. Their tools, including single sign-on (SSO) and audit logs, are designed to empower developers to integrate robust security solutions with minimal effort. By focusing on open-source principles, BoxyHQ provides flexibility, control, and accessibility, catering to development teams across industries.

The Challenge

When BoxyHQ released the first working version of their platform, they needed to introduce their tools to the developer community, gather feedback, and grow their GitHub activity. The team aimed to showcase the value of their solutions for simplifying security requirements like single sign-on (SSO) and audit logs.

The challenge was clear: attract the right audience, drive engagement within open-source communities, and establish credibility as a trusted name in developer-first security.

Our Approach

Our journey with BoxyHQ started with understanding their audience and engaging directly with the developer community. Platforms like Reddit, Slack, and Discord became our starting points. Through active participation, regular posts, and direct conversations, we helped BoxyHQ connect with developers who could offer meaningful insights. Over 130 feedback sessions were facilitated, each providing actionable input that allowed the team to fine-tune their platform and messaging.

To deepen these efforts, we conducted 23 interviews with developers and decision-makers, uncovering key industry pain points and opportunities. These insights became the foundation for a research paper exploring trends in developer-first security. This piece not only positioned BoxyHQ as a thought leader but also sparked conversations about the evolving needs of the open-source community.

Visibility was another key focus. We organized four product launches across platforms like Product Hunt and Hackernews, introducing BoxyHQ’s tools to early adopters and technology enthusiasts. Each launch was designed to create a buzz, showcasing individual tools within their ecosystem and driving interest among developers.

At the same time, we supported the growth of BoxyHQ’s Discord community, which became a hub for real-time discussions, AMAs, and continuous feedback. By the end of our collaboration, the community had grown to over 300 active members, forming a loyal and engaged user base.

To maintain momentum, we developed a content strategy that consistently highlighted BoxyHQ’s value across Twitter, Reddit, and other developer platforms. Each interaction and post reinforced the platform’s position as a reliable and innovative solution for developers.

The Results

The impact of these efforts was visible across every corner of BoxyHQ’s presence. On GitHub, their repository gained over 500 stars within six months, a significant milestone that reinforced their credibility among developers. The Discord community, which had started with a small group, grew to over 300 active members, creating a constant stream of engagement and feedback.

The four product launches on Product Hunt and Hackernews introduced BoxyHQ to entirely new audiences, generating interest and conversations that extended far beyond the open-source community. Meanwhile, the research paper, built from the insights of 23 interviews, became a valuable resource for BoxyHQ’s audience, sparking discussions around developer-first security trends.
