Improving Engagement and Monetization for a Digital Recipe App

Client Overview

IMP – International Masters Publishers is a long-standing global brand best known for physical recipe collections, hobby kits, and educational products. As demand for print products declined, the company launched MyGreatRecipes.com, a digital platform allowing users to search, save, and share more than 100,000 curated recipes.

Eager to scale the platform and better engage users, IMP Digital partnered with Solveo to explore new growth levers, engagement strategies, and monetization opportunities—while remaining competitive in an oversaturated food-tech space.

Challenge

MyGreatRecipes entered the U.S. food-tech market with strong content and a well-built platform, offering users over 100,000 searchable recipes. But while the app was rich in features, the product wasn’t gaining traction at the speed IMP Digital expected.

The team was facing three core challenges:

  1. Low brand visibility in a space dominated by large competitors

  2. Poor user retention and engagement, despite a solid recipe library

  3. No monetization model—the platform wasn’t generating revenue

On top of this, user behaviors in the food content space were changing fast. IMP Digital needed more than marketing—they needed clarity. Who was the right audience? What features actually mattered? And what would convince someone to return again and again?

Our Approach

To answer these questions, we structured a four-week sprint around three pillars: growth, engagement, and monetization.

We kicked things off with a deep-dive brand and product audit, looking at everything from user acquisition flows and drop-off points to UI performance and messaging tone. Then, we launched a structured research phase. Four multidisciplinary teams, guided by Solveo, conducted:

  • 300+ user surveys to uncover behavior patterns and pain points

  • 20 competitor analyses to benchmark market positioning and feature sets

  • Interviews with industry experts to test assumptions and spot trends

  • A UX walkthrough to flag usability issues and friction points

Insights quickly emerged. The brand wasn’t standing out. The product lacked hooks for repeat usage. And most importantly, there was an untapped niche—moms with young children—who were underserved by most mainstream recipe platforms.

Each team then took one direction forward. Some focused on content-led growth through food facts, short-form video, and micro-interactions. Others explored engagement loops, proposing user-generated culinary challenges and social recipe-sharing features. And one team focused entirely on monetization—mapping out a new revenue strategy based on premium content, affiliate links, and branded partnerships.

Their recommendations were concrete and backed by real data. And most of them were later implemented by the IMP team.
